Doug Caves Sr.
My paintings come from a personal emotional response I feel from the people, places and circumstances I experience. I make paintings that explore how these emotions are evoked through the images on the canvas. The subtle play of light and texture across the structures and artifacts of the New England landscape inspire me. I build my canvases in layers of color and brush strokes that help me to draw out the personal feeling that I am experiencing and land it on the canvas. Through exploration and discovery, my process takes me through to an expression of those emotions. Through delicate shifts in tone and composition I find the right “mood” of what is I am trying to paint. I hope to evoke an essential emotion in the viewer that communicates that and draws you in, offering you a reason to pause.”
Doug Caves attended the Fine Arts Program at Mt. Wachusett Community College studying art history, painting, drawing and sculpture and received the school’s Annual Purchase Award for his bronze sculpture “Head of Joy” in his last year of attendance. He has studied painting and drawing at the Worcester Art Museum and creative writing at Clark University. These days he paints frequently along the Southern Maine Coast and in the rural hills of Central Massachusetts, finishing his larger works in his studio. He currently offers classes in Landscape and still life painting through various venues and learning programs.
About D. H. Caves Sr.
Doug Caves has been a lifelong student of the Arts. He attended the Fine Arts Program at Mt. Wachusett Community College studying art history, painting, drawing and sculpture and received the school’s Annual Purchase Award for his bronze sculpture “Head of Joy” in his last year of attendance. He has studied painting and drawing at the Worcester Art Museum and creative writing at Clark University. Caves moved from an abstract approach to painting in his late twenties to explore the more representational genres that seemed to suit his need to have his feet planted firmly in the ground while his head and heart explored beyond the limits of physical reach. Caves spent many years pondering the meaning of and exploring the value of making art through various venues like house painting, home remodeling, landscape design and installation. He went on to acquire a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and then a Masters degree in Communication through Clark University. Caves says that his approach to discovery has always been characterized by a desire to dive right in contrasted by a cautionary practice to take a perpendicular approach, a desire to discover through experience and a belief that the best is yet to come.
Caves' art work is im many private collections across the United States. Doug is affiliated with the Masterpiece Gallery in Boston, MA, the Frame Depot in Milford, NH, Portland Art Gallery, Portland, ME, the Gallery at the Grand in Kennebunk, ME, Gallery 529, Littleton, MA, The Boulder Art Gallery, Fitchburg, MA and has been represented by Canvas Fine Arts, showing at various Boston venues such as Boston City Hall and the Liberty Hotel
